The Apostle Paul wrote this letter while under house arrest in Rome around 61–62 AD.
He sent it across the Mediterranean to the church he had established in Philippi, which was a prominent Roman colony located in northeastern Greece (Macedonia).
Paul wrote this letter, when he was in Prison in Rome, Italy. ( Philippians is one of the 5 letters he wrote in Prison )

He was actually writing with chains on his wrists.

Writing to the saints of the Church
Joy in Jesus and not in Circumstances. Joy in God Purpose than personal comfort.
Philippians 1 teaches that true joy during difficult circumstances ( in our personal life) comes from a single-minded focus on the glory of Christ and the spiritual advancement of the church.
Apostle Paul models how shifting our perspective from our personal comfort to God's greater purpose can completely transform the experience of Suffering.
How do the people of Philippi feel that there founder of church is in Prison ? Persecuted for his faith ?
Acts 16:6-12
Paul was planning to speak the word in Asia, but the spirit of jesus did not allow him. Instead Paul gets a vision to visit Macedonia.
v 11 So, setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis, 12 and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the[d] district of Macedonia and a Roman colony.
This established the first European churches, including Philippi.
“The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, ‘Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.’” (Acts 23:11, NIV)
Paul didnt planned to be in Rome. It was not his plan.
Paul wrote the book of Romans even before he visited them.
Paul's Original Intention: In Romans 15:23-24, Paul expressed his desire to visit Rome merely as a brief stopover while on his way to pioneer new ministry fields in Spain.
Paul did not arrive in Rome as a free-traveling missionary planter as he might have envisioned. Instead, he arrived as a Roman prisoner in chains, following an arrest in Jerusalem, a trial before governors, and a shipwreck at sea.
But God planned and its God's mission.
Paul obeyed on both occassions, glorifying God and didnt go as per his plan. Paul was strategic and passionate planner, his itineary was rewritten by God's divine intervention.

Paul is comforting his members ( believers in Philipi Church )
Whatever happened to him ( Paul 1st prison imprisonment).. is happening because of God's event to advance the gospel.
... "my imprisonment( chains) is for Christ".
So that all the imperial guards and officials Neuro court will hear the Gospel.
He is on a GOD'S MISSION
It also helps other believers can become confident by looking at Paul imprisonment and able to share Gospel. ( Speak the word without Fear )
Paul had, a single mindset that no matter what was happening to him in his circumstances, as long as Christ was preached and Christ was glorified, it brought him great joy.
Paul didn’t gripe, complain, get critical, didn’t blame anybody. If I were to write the letter, I would probably start like, “Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen. Pray for me. Help me. Deliver me. Do something for me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
But Paul is like .. “I’m in here because of Christ. I’m here to glorify Christ. I’m here to preach Christ. It doesn’t matter what happens to me as long as Christ is preached.
“For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” It profits him nothing. Paul’s suffering allowed him to see that Jesus Christ is the one thing worthwhile in his life.
The question is, Am I willing to go through the fire? Am i willing to be put in chains, to be thrown into prison, to suffer for His name? Am I willing to face the persecution and opposition of the world that God be glorified? Whatever restrictions, whatever expectations, whatever hope I have, can I narrow that down to Christ be glorified.
