Atonement is the process of making amends for a wrong or injury to achieve reconciliation.
Passover and Atonement
While both deal with sin, Passover focuses on the protection from the consequence of sin (death), and Atonement focuses on the purification and total removal of the condition of sin.
Jesus Christ reconciled humankind to God through his life, suffering, and sacrificial death.
The cross is the epitome of Roman power and might. It is the essence of human sin and suffering.
‘All who want to come after me must say no to themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow me. All who want to save their lives will lose them. But all who lose their lives because of me will save them’” (Luke 9:23-24).
The work of the cross is the work of the atonement.
The word "atonement" literally describes the process of becoming "at one" with God again.
It is the restoration of a relationship fractured by sin.
Atonement is about how this thing – the cross, crucifixion and resurrection – works. It is about how we become at one with God.
