v 3-5
Jesus Brothers: Seeking Popularity and Fame
v3 Brothers want to leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.
v4 No one works in secret if he wants to be known publicly. If you do these things, manifest yourself to the world. v5 For his brothers did not believe in him.
The text explicitly notes that even His own brothers did not believe in Him at this point.
The brothers wanted Him to play by the world's rules of ambition and status.
The Pharisees: Shocked by His Knowledge
v15 The Jews were amazed and said, “How does he know scripture without having studied?
v24 Stop judging by appearances, but judge justly.
They judge Jesus based on academic status rather than divine truth.
Because Jesus healed people on the Sabbath (which they viewed as a strict violation of God's law), they concluded that He could not be from God. In their minds, anyone breaking their Sabbath rules had to be a sinner and a fraud.
Jesus' Argument: He pointed out that if a baby’s eighth day of life falls on a Sabbath, the Pharisees will still perform a circumcision to keep the Law of Moses (John 7:22–23).
Jesus responds that His knowledge does not come from human schooling, but directly from the One who sent Him. ( v16-18)
The Pharisees miss the truth because they are guarding their own intellectual and political power. They were expecting rabbinical traning.
while Jesus came to save them from their sins, the Pharisees rejected Him because they didn't think they had any sins to be saved from. They wanted a political king, but Jesus came as a spiritual Savior
Jesus: Offering the Living Spirit
On the final day of the festival, Jesus shouts to the crowds, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink" (John 7:37).
v39: "By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive."
To Speak the Absolute Truth of the Father:
Jesus states that He did not come on His own initiative or to teach His own human ideas. He came as an authorized messenger to deliver God's direct words.
My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me." (John 7:16)
The Purpose: He came to reveal the true character of God to a world that had misunderstood Him.
To Honor God, Not Himself
Unlike His brothers who wanted fame, or the Pharisees who wanted status, Jesus came with total humility to redirect all attention back to the Creator.
Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth...(John 7:18)
The Purpose: He came to model perfect obedience and show humanity how to live for God's glory rather than self-interest.
To Expose the World’s Brokenness
Jesus explains to His brothers why the religious and social establishment hates Him. He came as a spiritual light that naturally exposes darkness.
The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil. (John 7:7)
The Purpose: He came to confront hypocrisy and show people their desperate need for internal repentance.
To Satisfy Spiritual Thirst with the Holy Spirit
This is the ultimate climax of the chapter. Jesus came to offer a deep, permanent spiritual satisfaction that human rituals could never provide.
Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me... rivers of living water will flow from within them. (John 7:37–38)
The Purpose: He came to give the Holy Spirit to believers, transforming them from the inside out.
Many times when we share Gospel to friends and strangers, we think that we are doing all the work and not realizing that God did all the work already to each any every inviduals heart, God also share the words that we need to share with them. Below verses clearly says that
v15 The Jews were amazed and said, “How does he know scripture without having studied?
16 Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not my own but is from the one who sent me.
17 Whoever chooses to do his will* shall know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speak on my own.
18 Whoever speaks on his own seeks his own glory, but whoever seeks the glory of the one who sent him is truthful, and there
is no wrong in him.
