Righteousness is the state of being morally right, honorable, and just. It means living a life that is fair, honest, and aligned with good values.
In plain words, you can think of righteousness as having three main parts:
Doing Good: Taking action to be fair, honest, and helpful to those around you.
Integrity: Making choices that are morally correct, even when no one is looking.
Good Relationships: Living in peace and harmony with others and the world.
Most people ( non believers ) tend to follow/lookup someone as example and try to be good like them.
As a believer in Christ, we already have someone to look up to:
Jesus as the Righteous One
1 John 2:1: "My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One."
1 Peter 3:18: "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God."
Acts 3:14: "You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you."
The Bible’s standard of human righteousness is God’s own perfection in every attribute, every attitude, every behavior, and every word.
The bad news is that true and perfect righteousness is not possible for man to attain on his own through our own efforts or obedience of the law; the standard is simply too high.
The good news is that true righteousness is possible for mankind, but only through the cleansing of sin by Jesus Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 3:22: "This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe."
Romans 5:19: "For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous."
Our righteousness: Isaiah 64:6 All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags. we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.
God’s righteousness: Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
According to prophet Isaiah, our righteousness i.e. self-righteousness is a filthy rag.
Our attempts to be right in deeds and conducts is nothing but a filthy rag.
Our "good acts' does not matter to God if you don't believe in Jesus. it is nothing but dead works.
God’s righteousness is a position not influenced by our acts or deeds.
Why do we need to be righteous ?
If righteous is a gift, why we need to earn it ?
Benefits of Righteousness ?
On the cross, Jesus exchanged our sin for His perfect righteousness so that we can one day stand before God and He will see not our sin, but the holy righteousness of the Lord Jesus.
This means that we are made righteous in the sight of God; that is,
that we are accepted as righteous and
treated as righteous by God on account of what the Lord Jesus has done.
He was made sin; we are made righteousness.
On the cross, Jesus was treated as if He were a sinner, though He was perfectly holy and pure, and we are treated as if we were righteous, though we are defiled and depraved.
To pursue righteousness is the way of life, because “righteousness delivers from death.” Proverbs 10:2
James 5:16 Answered prayers: God Pays close attention to the prayers of those who live righteously.
Psalm 5:12 God's favor and Protection: God surrounds those who walk uprightly with unearned favor.
Proverbs 28:1 Divine Boldness. Sin often created fear, guilt and sense of hiding, whereas right living instills deep confidence.
Proverbs 10.24 - Fulfillment of Desires
The Problem: God is perfectly holy, and human sin creates a separation from Him. No one can save themselves because no human can achieve perfect righteousness on their own.
The Solution: Salvation happens when God takes a believer's sin and places it on Jesus, and in return, takes Jesus' perfect righteousness and places it on the believer.
The Legal Verdict: Because of this exchange, God declares the believer "not guilty." This legal declaration is called justification, which is the very beginning of salvation.
2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
the word "become" means a complete change of state, identity, and legal standing ( new person )
Jesus "became" sin: Jesus did not suddenly become a bad person or a sinner in His character. Instead, our sins were legally placed on Him, and He took the penalty for them.
In Christ: The verse notes this happens "in him." You possess this new status because you are spiritually united with Jesus.
Ephesians 2:8–9: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast."
Titus 3:5: "...he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
Romans: 36 times — This book contains his most thorough explanation of the "righteousness of God".
Galatians: 8 times — Used primarily to argue that righteousness comes through faith, not by following the Mosaic Law.
2 Corinthians: 7 times — Often used to describe the "ministry of righteousness."
