Galatians 4: 1 - 7
Slave -> Son -> Heir
Paul compares a young heir to a slave. Even though the child technically owns the estate, they must obey guardians until they reach the age set by their father. He applies this to spiritual history.
Before Christ: We are "underage" and enslaved to the "elementary principles of the world" or the law. (v3)
The Fullness of Time: At the exact right moment, God sent His Son—born of a woman and under the law—to redeem those under the law. (v4)
Adoption: Through Christ, believers are no longer slaves but have received "adoption as sons". (v5)
The Spirit of Sons: As proof of this new status, God sent the Holy Spirit into believers' hearts, which prompts them to call God "Abba, Father" (v6)
Galatians 4:4, what does "born under the law" means?
Jesus Christ was born as a Jewish man, subject to the same divine requirements and obligations of the Mosaic Law as any other Israelite.
As a Jewish male, Jesus was subject to all Jewish customs and regulations, such as being circumcised on the eighth day and presented at the Temple and offered sacrifices as the law required. (Luke 2:22–24).
Matthew 5:17 (NKJV) : Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
Slave -> Son -> Heir
Galatians 3:29: "And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise"
Normally, a lawyer or a father handles the transition from child to heir. Here, God is the one doing the work:
He sent the Son to buy you out of slavery.
He sent the Spirit to give you the identity of a son.
He bypassed the Law to make you an heir directly.
It’s "through God" because it didn't happen through my merit, my family tree, or my religious performance.
What is "through God,"(v7) means ? ( means God Initiated )
Generally, you become an heir through lineage (birth) or legal paperwork (adoption).
Paul is saying this inheritance is different because God Himself is the one who initiated, processed, and guaranteed it.
God "sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts" (Gal. 4:6). In a sense, the Holy Spirit is the notary seal on your adoption papers. It is God’s way of saying, "This person is officially mine"
If you became an heir through your own effort (keeping the Law), you could lose it by failing.
But since you are an heir "through God,"(v7) the inheritance is as secure as God is.
It’s a "sovereign adoption"—God decided it, God paid for it, and God maintains it.
The practical shift:
A Slave works to get something.
A Son waits for something.
An Heir through God lives from the reality that they already own it.
Because I am now a child of God, I are a legal heir. Everything that belongs to the Father now belongs to me through Christ.
The Distinction
Through Christ: Is the means. He removed the legal barrier (the Law/Sin) that kept you from the inheritance.
Through God: Is the source. He is the Father who wanted you in the family and the One who grants the status by His own authority.
The Summary:
You are an heir of God (the Father), in Christ (the Son), and verified by the Spirit.
Heir of God means,
through faith in Jesus, believers are adopted into God's family, granting them full rights as children to inherit divine blessings, eternal life, and the kingdom of God.
No Longer Slaves
As adopted children, believers share in the same inheritance as Jesus, which includes His glory, riches, and authority.
Being an heir involves sharing in the sufferings of Christ, which are considered insignificant compared to the future glory to be revealed.
